Yea recently yahoo have been resetting a lot of their servers. It's either due to the server being down at the time you are attempting to access your email. Or your IP has been banned on that server (which only lasts 24 if on cable or Dsl, or if you're on dial-up just disconnect from the net and reconnect). So best bet is to just try again later because unless you are attempting to crack yahoo accounts then it's the server that's down.

Actually this error occures if you are accessing yahoo mail through proxy (MS Proxy, ISA etc). But works fine with Direct address.

Not sure whether Proxy requests are not allowed by yahoo!!

I too have been getting frequent Error *** when trying to log on to Yahoo mail.

There is a workaround: Start from http://btyahoo.com . When you get to the login prompt, enter your complete email address, e.g. "user****x@**********" sted just "user****x".

I would have to say that either changing the IP Address or attempting to wait untill the server accepts your request. One way to tell if the servers will accept your request from the current IP Address is to go in to the command prompt and ping mail.********** and see if the packets returned matches the packets sent and what % of a loss you have to that server.
The Yahoo mail servers usually ban the IP Address for *6 hours tops. When you get to the point that that yahoo servers themselves won't accept your request then you have a problem.

I Know this because i work for the company that runs the servers.

I doubt it has to do with IP address because if I clean all my IE cache, history, etc. and then restart IE I can then login to one of my other Yahoo accounts, just not the one where I received the *** error and I am still at the same IP address. My opinion is it has to do with bandwidth being used by your account. This didn't used to be an issue (as far as I know) back when free accounts were limited to 2MB of storage space and the email attachment size was also restricted. I have seen this when I haven't logged into an account for a while and I have lots of messages waiting with attachments that I then download. It also seems to be possibly based on the load Yahoo sees on their end (more users accessing site, less bandwidth they will allow during that time?).

Sometimes, going through btyahoo won't work either!! I don't know how to fix the problem but have found a work-around.

You need to find somewhere on the web that has an email address you can click on while you're logged in to Yahoo home page (the threads on this forum have a couple). This will take you into the yahoo Compose Mail screen. Near the top, you'll see all the tabs and one of them is Mail. Click on that and you're away. Works for me - hope it works for you too. Lunacy or what !!!!!!

Yay! I've finally come up with a pretty good workaround for this problem!

I have four Yahoo mail accounts and also use ePrompter to automatically check them (no, unfortunately, it doesn't work real well with Yahoo), and I get the "error ***" message on one account or another almost every day. Here's a workaround that seems to give access to the "unavailable" mail accounts pretty consistently; it requires the use of Yahoo! Messenger, so you'll need to have it installed on the computer from which you want to do this.

Log into Yahoo! Messenger using the account name you want to access. Select "Yahoo! Account Info" from the Messenger menu. It should open a browser window, ask you for the password on the account, then show you your account information. Click "Finished" in the account info window. Then click the "Mail" link in the upper left hand corner.

This should give you access to the account most of the time. Good luck!

Security Experts!

Just so you know, if you really want to keep your privacy; don't ever use the yahoo mail from messenger or the yahoo toolbar, if you have those you are better off uninstalling those because those software log on to yahoo directly, the proxies are usually for ssl, http, gopher and certain other port, while all software other than the browser use custom ports, which is **% is not handled by the proxy. So watch out! Also if you want privacy use firefox and install the proxy extension and the user agent switcher estension and always use them and make your user agent something like [zero] in all fields because based on your user agent pattern and ip usage I can figure out a lot about you and i am not even thinking genious security anlysts who know much more than i do...

I thinkit has something to do with going through a porxy server. I was getting the same error on some of our computers that were going through a proxy. I unchecked the use a Proxy server in IE and I was able to get in no problem. I rebooted so the proxy server is used again and then I got the error. The wierd thing is that I use the proxy on my computer and I have no problem getting into my mail.

I am not able to check mails with yahoo.co.in account.

The problem is peculiar because i am able to log onto Yahoo messenger, yahoo photos and MYYahoo with the same user id and password. But cannot log onto the mail box.

Whenever i try to login, i get either time out or page cannot be found. (reason displayed: either server is down or your browser settings is not correct)

I mailed to yahoo help and they reply saying : cookies problem.change your browser settings.

I did clear the cache, chage the privacy settings to medium-low.
But still i am not able to log onto the account.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

The Solution

Below the login of yahoo mail, there is two modes for logging in.
One is "standard" and the other "secure".
Click on the "secure" which is in blue.
It will re***** the page and the standard mode will become blue.
Log in and it will works.

Hi, Fellow frustrated Yahooers.

I have the Error *** when trying to get into Yahoo games - cards. Everything works fine during non-busy times, but in high use, evening hours, it gets down to actually being frozen out. If I'm persistant, I can get in after *5 minutes of trying. I have tried every fix, new browser, cookies thing, back doors......etc. nothing works until Yahoo lets it work, when traffic slows down.
You might want to try it with you *** mail errors...try to go in during low traffic hours.
Good luck to us all..........we need it!

Why do some people here insist on being emailed to offer a s***ested fix? Why can't they just post it?

I tried Mark Dayton's s***estion...didn't work. The http://wap.oa.**********/ does work, even if it's limited. Certainly better than waiting around.

I've found some strange things happening when I access my Yahoo email accounts using IE or Maxthon (an IE shell - highly recommended). When I view, compose, or reply to an email, I'll see what looks like some downloading in process on the indicators of my DSL modem, and this hangs up the screen for 7-*0 seconds at a time. This continues as I navigate through the account. (No, this is not a spyware issue.) After a few of these delays, I get the Error *** message and I'll be locked out for a while. This does not happen when I access the account *initially* using Firefox. If I get the error as stated above, and I try FF to access the account, the error msg will still be there, at least until the lock is removed.

This solutions worked. First sign in with complete email address at btyahoo, then type mail.********** in the browser. You will be already logged. Sign off from there, then click on the return to yahoo mail, log in as usual in the mail login page. It worked... Thanks

The error seems to arise only when the Yahoo trace system is busy forwarding the identity of an account holder to the lists maintained by the Office of the U.S. Attorney General when an enormous load of pornography is constantly being requested to be funneled through a mailbox by a user. It's a pseudoerror condition used by the system to keep the user busy and visiting the site to autenticate the evidence they need in certain states and territories for prosecution. It usually goes away within 24 hours. No biggie.

This Yahoo Error is a Bandwidth Usage/Traffic Usage error.. anytime Yahoo's serbers are bogged down, or the particular thing you are trying to link to has been accessed frequently it causes the system to let itself catch back up... it's **% of the time bandwidth or traffic issues.. the other *% sorry guys!! I know this is for a fact because I host files on a geocities (part of yahoo) website.. and when i link to the pictures sometimes if i get high traffic or alot of hits, it will start giving that error as if Traffic is the culprit!:) hope this clears things up a little.. only solution is use messenger to acces your mail.. or wait it out till badnwidth has been restored and traffic is lower :).. hope this helps! cheers mates

i had encountered the *** problem and have read up on rectifying the problem.

despite numerous s***estions i still have found no solution.

i hav used foriegn servers, messenger, changed browser settings and deleted all objects cookies etc. ppl say its an IP problem but im not sure. i am on cable so its a static IP but i have used a masking program and it has no effect. i believe its definately a traffic blocking problem but still im unsure how yahoo blocks from individual connections. Obviously yahoo knows an IP address but if it is masked can it still detect the original IP? Survice to say i think waiting for yahoo to unban u is the only solution.
