This is the simpliest explanation:
Consider a site, hosted on a fiber optic T*0*, and providing a bandwidth of 200Mbs. (amazon, yahoo, msn..)
Those sites are designed to handle something like > *000 simultaneous connections.
In other words, they are able to serve about *000 client at the same time, however, they won't be able to serve *0000 client at the same time. In this later case, we say that they deny. This is the denial of service (DOS).
A virus like msblast, targetted port 445 of thousands of PC, then abused their TFTP server to force them upload a client that was programmed to connect to MS site on a certain day/time.
If these thousands of (ZOMBIE) connections should occur at the same day/time, the MS site won't be able to cope with all those thousands of requests. This will put the MS site in a denial of service.
When the bandwidth is saturated, any further connection attempt will last for hours before opening the page. We usually say "this site is very slow". But if we need to wait for hours, then it's not simply "slow", it's a denial of service.
Consider now a simple http site running on somebody's home 56k modem!
In this case, it will be more than enough to have 4 connections from clients running a 2Mb cable connection to put this poor server in a denial of service.
Conclusion: THERE IS NO PARTICULAR PROGRAM to cause a DOS, it is rather the number of connections vs the bandwidth of the host.
cheers ;)

Syntax******, there are two Unregistered users posting under this topic. i am the one which said about ddos-ing his own website. and i mean it. as a matter of fact, my web site doesn`t exist at the moment, but i will open port 80 on my winxp pro box with iis for this experiment. and ABHIS, i knew something about this type of attacks, but not that many details. thank you. now, SyntaX******, you requested my ip. but if you will ddos me, or not you, please excuse me, but, if i get ddos`ed by someone else, this will not help me at all, since i`m still not able to find out what is the practical procedure, exactly how one does it. so, i'm repeating myself now: i want to ddos a web site, so i'll make my computer a web server (as i see no risk in attacking my box in such way, other than becoming unavailable for other to browse my boring index.html). for this i intend to use a *0 Mb ethernet adapter, and attack my box from... at most 2 or maybe * other boxes with *0/*00 Mb ethernet adapters. now, could you please be more specific about the procedure? do i need to further limit the bandwidth allocated for that site? do i have any chance of affecting it in any way with such poor resources? or, if we are not allowed to discuss about such things, then i understand. thank you.
ps: can one also ddos (or even just dos) a ftp? i believe it could be done, right?

Hey i asked you Syntax****** can you help me or not?
I don't care what do you think of this website - THIS WEBSITE RUNNING BY SOME SCAMMER - THATS ALL.
I WANT TO DDOS THAT FUCKING WEBSITE - BECAUSE ITS ONLY WORKING FOR OWNSELF AND NOT PAYING TO MEMBERS.
BUT ALSO IF MY FRIEND WILL NOT GET *****S - THAN I THINK WE WILL START A NICE POWER FIGHT PROGRAM - WE BEGIN TO SPAM IT TO DEATH.
ADDING ALL EMAILS OF THAT HOST TO PORN NEWSLETTERS,GUESTBOOK,YAHOO GROUPS AND MORE.
I CANNOT BELEIVE HOW SUCH FUCKING SCAM EXISTS AND SUPPORTED CHINA PROVIDERS/HONG GONG PROVIDERS.
I WANNA DDOS THAT WEBSITE TO DEATH IF IT WILL NOT PAY ANY *****S TO MY FRIEND.
