Getting an IP through a message***rd/forum

Is it possible? And if so, could anyone possibly tell me how its done? Thanks.

The easiest way I can think of is to host a pic on a server you have, email the person and include the pic in the message. When they open the mail they have accessed the pic, so just go look at your logs and look up the ip that accessed the pic. Thats the persons IP.

Simple enough, no?
Any variation of this should be effective as well.
