za.net offers free domain names. I've got a couple there. It's a South African company, but I'm pretty sure they'll accept international sign ups.
You domain will look like this: www.mydomain.za.net

I don't believe they can offer that without charging something for it.. if you think about it, how could they? Most hosts doing that show plenty of ads to get their income, but this host has no ads as well? Something fishy..

Free web hosting is very bad. I have used it a few months ago and I lost all data and the owner was not replying my messages. I advise not to go for free hosting.
