The basics of hacking is knowing the technology you are dealing with. If you try to jump straight into the big stuff, you'll just get stuck as a skiddie doing crappy challenges on little hacker sites for points. Learning to program is essential to understanding the technology, and once you know it you'll be ready to move on to exploiting it.
