Sun buys MySQL
Sun BUYS MySQL for $* billion [read]
Keep your eyes open. LAMP configs might turn into LA$MP configs. This is upsetting news... MySQL could soon have a price tag on it.
-
Oh no...
EVERYONE PREPARE FOR STANDBY, LAUNCHING BACKUP INTERNETS CIRCA BEFORE SUN BOUGHT MYSQL.
If MySQL become priced, I'm gonna cry.
-
Sorry for the dumb question, but do you need IIS to use SQL Server, or can it work with Apache?
-
SyntaX****** - I mean no offense, but that comment is pretty . . . ignorant. You DO realize that Sun just open-sourced Java, right?
Explain how are you are correlating open source java with the $*,000,000,000 purchase of MySQL? From a business perspective charging for all versions of MySQL would be a great move for Sun. How would it not?
Maybe you have not done your homework. I have done it for you:
http://www.tometasoftware.com/MySQL-5-vs-Microsoft-SQL-Server-2005.asp
After reading that, explain why Sun would decide not to charge for the basic MySQL versions? The article clearly shows that MySQL should only be used in small business environments and should NOT be used on the Enterprise level. Sun will need to work on the Enterprise level version to get it up to par. Do you really think they will continue to give the only version recommended for small business use away for free?
Sun will take over and hopefully dominate Microsoft SQL Server. Will they do this by hoping a community of MySQL supporters will make changes and tweak the free code, report bugs, etc... If you think Sun can do it though open source freeware, explain why MySQL could not.
This is why I fear they may dicontinue the Free Version.
Oh, and if such an event would ever happen, Microsoft has its own free SQL edition
Are you recommending that every small business owner in the world migrate to a Microsoft backed product? Wow, never thought I would hear an experienced user recommend that.. ever... Do you have any web based businesses? Any MySQL dependent applications? My guess is NO, becuase that comment is just implausible and rediculous. Do you know the costs to migrate an entire company from MySQL to Microsoft SQL? It would be much cheaper to pay the license fee that Sun would charge to continue using MySQL Server.
No offense was taken from your comment. I guess I was ignorant in thinking that people reading this would actually do the research to understand the underlying business effects of the purchase. Sorry for assuming.
-
Well I mean, it seemed pretty obvious to me. I mean, why would Sun spend a billion dollars to acquire a company and then give away the software (in full) for free? Not much homework to do there.
-
How many of these apply to you:
*. You have zero experience using MySQL
2. You have zero experience in Server Administration
*. You have zero experience in Security
My guess would be all. If not post your websites. Post your original code.
Please stop posting unorganized, unquoted, false information. You are a MOD, not a regular user.
The only thing MySQL has going for it is it's open-source and free nature. Other than that, it's no big shit.
UNTRUE - MySQL is one of the most widely used database platforms in the world. If all it had going for it was open-source, SUN would not have purchased them for $* billion.
While they're at it, Sun would start charging for JRE distributions as well. They do that, the entire developer community would move to J#, C# and VB (the compilers themselves are actually free). It's all about DEVELOPERS!
Opinionated and off topic of MySQL and Database Platforms...
Oh, and God forbid we should ever use a Microsoft-backed product. I mean, throughout its history, Microsoft has never sold a good product. At all. Seriously. Not one good thing. I mean, everyone loves it, but it's terrible quality, right?
Again opinionated and off topic of Database Platforms... Everyone loves microsoft? What planet are you from?
Sun's had problems here and there, so I don't trust them. I would never use a Sun backed product, especially after that Strangebrew incident about *0 years ago or so

I'm starting to feel slightly defensive towards people who offend Sun.
... Slightly Bipolar?
I would go on about hating other countries for things they've done over 60 years ago
What!?
Sorry about the recent flames dude but if your going to post derogatory comments, be ready to back them up. If you do back them up do not reference personal opinions and blogs. Closing this thread.

Reminds me of my thread on Double Dutching in PHP. I ended up having to make a really wierd video showing the numerous ways "SyntaX****** pwns me" :D
But, I'm pretty sure by the end of the year this thread (and the bet) will be a mere memory.
Oh, and I never forget . . . never. :D
Is it me or do I smell a fellow /i/nsurgent?
-
I want to, but the nearest center is about 2 hours from where I live, so I'm not sure. Plus, I'm not sure that my area will get as big a turnout as Florida raids have.
-
Its not a bet, the point was that (charging for MySQL) is a possible outcome, warning those who need current backups to make them NOW. Its always stressful on IT when software companies merge or get bought out.
I'm not *00&#*7; sure about this one like I was with the Moonbat thread. So no, this thread will not go on the wall of PWNAGE.
About February *0th... Unfortunately rioting scientology center will not affect the companies cash flow. The only way to destroy an organization of this size is to stop ***** from transferring hands of (Cult Followers) to (Cult Leaders).
My s***estion would be to continuously DDOS the main server, continue tying up the phone lines, disrupting organizational flow by mass spamming the inner organizational leaders with realistic scientology emails to other members within the organization. bob@scientologycult.com -> joe@scientologycult.com - Trying to social engineering your way to a main username and or password. The IT admin is probably an Atheist anyways... Call him directly, you may be surprised.
Direct Access to the Admin:
"I would like to call and report a hole in your network giving access to millions of hackers world wide. Some group... umm... Anonymous has posted zero day flaws in your servers configuration and I would like to help the IT Administrator patch them up before the servers are cracked." <- Get you direct access to the IT Admin
Has anyone probed any of their servers? I know they handed over web hosting to a different organization that specialized in DDOS prevention.
Some are flaming the people who DDOS the server, but ya know what? It worked, it disrupted the organization enough that they had to move to an entirely new host. I say, keep up the good work.
Has anyone done research on the religion? Wow, it doesn't take a genius to realize these people are kooks. Scientology is the equivalent to a religion named Walt Disney where Mickey Mouse is your leader, you are forced to pay an admission fee, and you are never satisfied when its time to leave.
I don't think this small movement will bring down the religion, but its definitely a punch in the stomach.
-
I wasn't expecting you to agree with Anonymous, SyntaX, but I'm glad you do :D
The DDOS-protection CoS hired is called Prolexic. Basically, they filter all IPs that come through and block the ones that look like they're DOSing. They take the ones that make it and take them to the main site. If someone starts DDOSing the main site, the people get taken to a cache of the site courtesy of Prolexic.
So even if we do take down the site, the cache will still be up giving the impression that the site is still up. If we were to start DDOSing Prolexic (not likely) then the main site would still be up. Trying to DDOS both would divide our resources and we'd end up taking neither of the two sites down.
I've been searching forever for anything remotely vulnerable, but I have yet to find anything. The real problem is that we don't have enough people that know how to do anything besides fire up Longcat and press 'Start'.

MySQL is nigga technology.
Useless, pointless technology invented for the apparent purpose of prolonging a simple task beyond the length of time it should take. Nigga Technology is always used by a nigga, nigga meaning ignorant muthafucka.
"You mean aside from the fact that texting is the stupidest fucking thing in the world? I mean, why would anyone in their right mind spend fifteen minutes tryin' to type some shit they could've called and said in five seconds? Plus, it involves typing with your thumbs! Which I just don't approve of. Fuck, I don't know about you, but I don't have time to read nothin' that a motherfucker typed with they thumbs. Fun Fact: Nothing typed by someone's thumbs has ever been important. It's all just Nigga Technology anyway."- Gin Rummy

Calling MySQL useless?
*hands ~~smart~fool~~ a flame shield*
You're gonna need it :D

Cool, the worldwide headquarters of the CoS isn't too far away from me. When I get a car in a few months, I'll be sure to indulge in some petty vandalism. They may have DDoS protection for their site, but I'm pretty sure they doesn't have quite so good crowbar-protection for their head office.
I didn't actually know this crap had made it across the Atlantic.
That reminds me, I found mention of L Ron Hubbard as I was browsing the interweb:
http://rave-drugs.org/
Basically a misinformation campaign, as well as promotion for their bullshit "program" for drug addicts. They probably indoctrinate addicts into their dumb 'religion' when they're at their lowest.
It would be easier to list what they did get right, but here are a few gems I thought I'd share:
While drugs and their metabolites quickly become undetectable in blood and urine, some as rapidly as * days after last usage,
No, some as rapidly as 2 hours or less.
That accumulated drug residues continue to cause adverse symptoms
Um, no.
The New Life Detoxification Program utilizes a combination of exercise, induced sweating in a sauna, and nutritional supplements to produce the following results:
- Reduction or elimination of drug and alcohol cravings.
- Reduction or elimination of many symptoms associated with drug addiction and alcoholism. These can include depression, irritability, and fatigue.
No matter how much exercise you take or saunas you sit in, the only thing effective at resetting receptor upregulation/downregulation is time. Certain drugs such as dissociatives can temporarily stop someone feeling withdrawals, but they don't change the underlying addiction. They help by giving the addict a break from withdrawals while the brain has time to revert to normal (e.g. ibogaine).
The Narconon&#*74; New Life Detoxification Program is a percise regimen
Precise, like their spelling.
The Personal Values & Integrity Course gives the knowledge necessary to determine one's own values and achieve high personal integrity and honesty.
After all, the CoS is well known for its integrity and honesty.
The Narconon&#*74; drug rehabilitation program uses methodology researched and developed by American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.
Who is known for his extensive knowledge of pharmacology. Humanitarian? lol.
This is getting boring now, but naturally, I called their number and informed them that they're idiots.
